Has Anyone Healed Their Kidneys To The Point That They Could Stop Dialysis?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

My father was diagnosed 1.5 years ago after experiencing total kidney failure. It is hard not to despair at how difficult it is to manage both. He is in remission, but it's been one thing after another with dialysis. Now he is suffering from recurring peritonitis and I just wanted to ask you all if anyone was in a similar position and was able to heal their kidneys? Thank you ❤️

I'm sorry to hear about your father's struggles. Managing myeloma and dialysis can indeed be challenging. According to my knowledge base:

- About 50% of people diagnosed with multiple myeloma develop kidney problems or chronic kidney disease due to abnormal proteins damaging the kidneys.
- Some people with myeloma and kidney problems experience improvement in kidney function with effective myeloma treatment.
- In about 10% of people with multiple myeloma, kidney damage is severe enough to require kidney replacement therapy, such as dialysis.

While some individuals may see improvement in kidney function, it varies from person to person. Recurring peritonitis is a serious complication of peritoneal dialysis and should be closely monitored by healthcare professionals.

It's important to stay hopeful and continue working closely with your father's medical team to manage his condition.
