It's used at the beginning of myeloma diagnosis to sort of tell how aggressive our myeloma might be. It's not specific to cancer though. Inflammation, infection and kidney issues can also cause it to be high.

Hi LadyT, I just had my Oncologist Appointment today, I got to use my new port, I am a happy camper, no pain at all. Anyway as for Beta 2 Microglobulin mine was 4.12 last blood test, 5th highest in 4 years. I have been very alarmed but today they were not getting that excited because my M-Spike was almost 0. I have requested a PET SCAN, I am about 4 month late on getting one and that will show any lesions or tumors since I am a Stage 3 MM but then they say I am in remission, Can't figure all this STUFF out. Good luck.

B2M can also be high due to renal issues as per my doctor.
