Bone density tests are generally done in older women to check for osteoporosis. It is not invasive or painful. Either you oncologist or primary can order it. I have one done about every two years and have for several years now. It will check for bone porosity.

Kathryn,
In 2010 I fell and broke my arm. I belonged to an HMO at the time. They recommended bone scans for any 55+ member who presented with a broken bone. The scan revealed that I had severe osteoporosis. My GP told me that this was highly unusual in a 59 year old male, and that he suspected it was a secondary condition caused by something else. He was right. I had SMM which caused the osteoporosis. I would think that your oncologist who recommend a bone scan. The procedure is no big deal. It's similar to an x-ray.
As a 14-year MM survivor, I always tell patients to find a MM SPECIALIST. MM is complex and somewhat rare, but survivable. Best wishes

Kathryn,
I had one before I knew I had SMM. I was -3.6 which is severe osteoporosis, caused by high corticosteroids. I asked my Oncologist if I needed another one, since I wanted to know if it got worse or better, since I am taking calcium & magnesium supplements with D3 & K2. She said I didn’t need it. But I wanted it! She basically said she already knows I have osteoporosis, and didn’t want to expose me to more radiation. I think you need it. Start taking supplements. They really help. Curcumin helped me with pain.

If you have multiple myeloma and are experiencing fractures, you should discuss getting a bone density test with your oncologist. Oncologists, especially those specializing in myeloma, are well-equipped to handle such concerns and can provide the necessary tests and treatments.

My husband had it done last year. His general doctor set up the appointment. The clinic told my husband that they seldom have men come in for a bone density test.
