Lawrence, KS

Anyone have below normal sodium on their blood tests? My husbands sodium has been slightly low the last several blood tests. He is still intermediate risk smoldering myeloma.

For individuals with multiple myeloma, managing sodium intake is important, especially if there are concerns about kidney function. Here are some tips for maintaining a low-sodium diet:

- Avoid Processed Foods: Processed foods, packaged snacks, condiments, salad dressings, sauces, and restaurant or takeout foods are typically high in sodium.
- Read Labels: Check food labels for sodium content and choose low-sodium options.
- Cook at Home: Preparing meals at home allows you to control the amount of salt used.
- Use Herbs and Spices: Flavor your food with herbs, spices, and other seasonings instead of salt.

Staying well-hydrated is also crucial, as it supports kidney function and overall health. Water is the best choice for hydration, and it's advisable to limit sugary drinks like fruit juice, soda, and sweetened teas. If plain water is not appealing, consider adding fresh fruit, fruit extract, or low-sugar sports drinks like G2 by Gatorade, Propel flavored electrolyte water, or Vitaminwater Zero.

Thanks for the info Mark. Rick was seen by a nephrologist and had a kidney biopsy last March to rule out kidney light chain involvement (which they did). He is being followed by his myeloma specialist every 3 mos. Been IR risk SMM since January 2022. He was originally diagnosed MGUS Nov. 2019.

Hi Gayle, I'm IR SMM also. I had low sodium and was referred to a kidney specialist, a nephrologist, because my family doc said low sodium can be potentially dangerous. In my case, I had been on a low-salt diet and just starting eating more salt again. That brought me back up into the low-normal range.

The nephrologist said it can be not too hard to bring low sodium back to normal by eating more salt, and that's fine, but she said it's important to find out what the underlying cause is because, for one thing, certain kinds of cancer can cause that.

Once she found out I had SMM and was being followed by a hematologist/oncologist she seemed to feel I was in their care now and she could bow out of it.

I'm thinking I might try going lower salt again and see if I get low sodium again and see what the hematologist thinks. I think it's healthier not to eat much salt.

Anyway, I hope that helps and it sounds like it's important for a specialist to be working with you on that.

How long have you know about the IR SMM? It's only been 6 months for me.
