Good answer Lynn!
There is a range that my Kappa and Lambda light chains run in ; Kappa 4.0-6.7 mg/dl on an upper limit of 1.9 , lambda roughly half near the optimum 2.0 ratio. That is a 30% variation which was initially scary until I considered statistics and conditions. Light chains can vary by lab testing, your physical health ,condition ,and the ideal is to watch for the trend either up or down over time. Discuss your values and trends with your oncologist as there is an upper limit for your multiple myeloma case. My oncologist suggested that I relax and we would not be alarmed until I hit over 8.0 and there is a clear consistent trend along with other blood lab values and my overall health symptoms. I am in complete remission and on Revlimid 15.0 mg 21 days, 7 days off. I have had MM since 2019 and remission for 2 years and 11 months counting. πŸ™πŸ™

Hi Pat, my light chain number is going up. During summer it was going up, came down on its own but my MM specialist started me on a new protocol including Krypolis. Unfortunately I had a very bad reaction to that drug and we are switching to Pomalast starting today. But while I was between chemo drugs, my numbers came down again, then went started to climb again. From what I've read, light chains can be volatile for various reasons, even with MM. This is why trying not to worry while you wait for complete information is important. I know it's easier said than done for sure, but try not to worry. And the bottom line is, worry won't change your diagnosis and can cause more stress on your immune system. Here's some food for thought, MM is a manageable illness. I just turned 60 and I am going to be here for my 70th. I'm already planning my 70th bday party lol. πŸ₯³
Remember, your are not a "cancer patient", you are a strong beautiful person living with and managing a chronic disease. The MM doesn't define you.

Hi Patbrown!

If your kappa/lamba light chain is high, it means your cancer cells, abnormal plasma B cells, are growing and producing high amounts of kappa light chains. Plasma B cells normally produce specific proteins called antibodies to fight disease. Antibodies consist of heavy and light chains. In the case of myeloma light chain disease, only abnormal light chains are produced and secreted into the blood. Once your medical team finds a treatment to get your cancer cells under control, lower them significantly, your kappa/lambda light chain ratio should significantly decease. The best and most proven treatment is an autologous bone/stem cell transplant. I had one eight months ago and am doing quite well. I even went back to work part time.

I hope this information answered your question and that you feel better β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή better very soon. πŸ₯°

Good evening Pat Brown. Knowing what type of myeloma you have is very important. Elevated light chains with an abnormal ration means your myeloma is active. If you have Kappa myeloma your kappa will be elevated and your ratio will be high. If you are Lambda light chain myeloma your Lambda will be elevated and your ratio will be low. I'm have IgG Lambda myeloma. So, I always look at the Lambda number and make sure it isn't going up. Have you had a chance to check out Healthtree University? They have very current videos from top myeloma Specialists that tell all about myeloma. Have a blessed night. Love Donna πŸ₯°πŸ™πŸ’—πŸ’•
