When Is The Optimum Time To Get A Stem Cell Transplant?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭
Westampton, NJ

I am treated by two separate oncologists for multiple myeloma: my regular oncologist's position is I should do the stem cell transplant while I am doing well in my treatment (meaning ASAP!). My Uni. of Penn Hospital oncologist who is responsible for my stem cell collection (which was completed in July 2024) takes the position that as long as I am doing well in my treatment, there is no rush to do the stem cell transplant.

Other Options Rather Than Stem Cell Transplant

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭
Greer, SC

Oncologist preparing for stem cell transplant for my husband, but after careful research, he does not know if he wants to undergo such a grueling procedure which has no guarantee of remission. He is doing quite well with his weekly chemo treatments which have astounded his doctors. Has anyone used alternative measures other than stem cell transplant, and instead decided on another version of treatment. We are so overwhelmed and indecisive about this.

Is There A Loss Of MSCs, PSCs Along With HSCs During Stem Cell Transplant?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭
Dallas, TX

Question re stem cell transplant - Bone marrow contains several kinds of stem cells Hematopoitic (HSC), Mesenchymal (MSC) and Parenchymal (PSC). We hear only about (pre-collected) HSCs being inserted back. HSCs regenerate RBCs, WBCs, and Platelets. Other stem cells regenerate bone/cartiledge tissues and so on. What happens to loss of these stem cells due to Melphalan? Are these other stem cells collected and reinserted (I hope they are)? I do not see any reference material but I am sure some… read more
