My WBC, RBC, Hemaglobin, And Hematocrit Were Really Low. How Can I Improve Them?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭
New Bern, NC

Went for my bimonthly bloodwork today and my WBC, RBC, Hemaglobin, and Hematocrit were really low. So I get a week off my Revlimid 10mg to see how the numbers look in a week. Any suggestions for improving them?

Low levels of WBC, RBC, hemoglobin, and hematocrit can be common during myeloma treatments like Revlimid. Here are some suggestions to help improve them:

1. Nutrition: Eat iron-rich foods (lean meats, dark leafy greens, legumes) and foods high in folate (eggs, dairy, nuts). Ensure adequate vitamin B12 and vitamin C intake to support blood cell production.

2. Hydration: Stay well-hydrated to support overall health.

3. Rest: Allow your body time to recover and regenerate.

4. Medications: Discuss with your doctor about treatments like erythropoietin (EPO) to stimulate red blood cell production or Neupogen for white blood cells.

5. Avoid Infections: Practice good hygiene and avoid crowded places to protect your immune system.

Always consult your healthcare provider before making changes to your diet or treatment plan.

I made calves liver and onions for breakfast every day for 2 weeks. For the first time in two years my Red blood count was in the average range . It’s a correlation . I think the iron in the liver helped a lot. Spinach (with lemon to help with iron absorbtion) is another source of iron. and hydration.
My two cents…

I was on 10 mg Revlimid with no breaks and my blood count numbers were always low. They decreased me to 5 mg and that helped some. Finally they kept me on 5 mg but changed my cycle to 21 on and 7 off. That finally got me to where my platelets and wbc were wry low normal. My hgb and jct increased over time by me taking testosterone gel for low T. Going on the Testosterone really helped my energy level. It is my belief that the chemo drugs, radiation and everything related to the SCT knocked out my Testosterone production. It took some pushing by me to have my Primary doc get bot( the Free T and Total T labs, I am glad I did. Normal Tstosterone is very important to your total health. It is not just for the bedroom.
