Is A 2nd Opinion A Good Idea ?

I was diagnosed with SMM 3 months ago. My hematologist/Oncologist said treatment at this stage would make me sicker as I don't have symptoms (I think) It's so confusing for me due to other health issues like Osteoarthritis in my knees and back. Also Degenerative Disk Disease which at 67 is not surprising. I'm in the wait & watch phase. I also got addicted to pain meds after being on a high dose of morphine for several decades. I feel like I've got so much going on it's overwhelming. I go to a… read more

TY. I've had Pet scan (no lesions) Bone Marrow Biopsiy, and Labs × 3 months now. I do have real intense achy type pain in my feet, legs, hips, that come on like a tornado and leave. Doc swears it's not related to SMM. I know my body better than anyone and this is a different type pain. I'm gonna let him know once more as I usually just ask, " Are you sure this is unrelated"? I'm told , " No your tests don't indicate it". These days they all think people want pain meds. That's not the case. Just gets my attention.

Kenneth I ramble also; prefer to call it venting, whIch I do quite a bit of in here, huh guys??? Hey, we are here for a reason; to get answers and the support is a bonus.
I vote for a second opinion; it can't hurt and you'll feel better knowing what's really going on.

I feel your pain Kenneth, I have a brother who just passed away a few weeks ago. We had service for him today. He also lived for today & neglected his body, many years of heavy drinking, which he stopped about 25 years ago. But continued with a bad diet & no exercise. He had many issues before he passed including a transplanted kidney that failed & too weak to get another one. He was 69 years old, I year older than me and we were very close. I had never experienced grieving like I am now. I would say try tackling 1 issue at a time to keep from getting overwhelmed. Probably good diet and exercise would be a place to start. Good luck & I hope you get it all under control.

I never thought about pain meds.....but yes, it makes sense sometimes; about giving pain meds to patients too easily.

Hi Ken before looking for a second opinion make sure you have had all the right tests. I asked for second opinion before I asked for the right tests like a bone marrow biopsy. I had my answers by the time the tests were done. I was initially diagnosis with just MGUS for a year and had blood tests every six months. I had a lot of pain so asked for the BMB as a result of which I was upgraded to smoldering and was then entitled to PET scan. The second opinion in my case was useless. I am in Canada so things are a little different with our health care system.
