- Precursor: SMM is preceded by monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS).
- Plasma Cells: Both SMM and multiple myeloma affect plasma cells, a type of white blood cell that makes antibodies.
- Progression Risk:
- First 5 Years: About 10% of people with SMM develop multiple myeloma each year.
- 5 to 10 Years: About 3% develop multiple myeloma each year.
- 10+ Years: About 1% develop multiple myeloma each year.
- Risk Factors:
- Gene changes in plasma cells.
- High numbers of plasma cells in the bone marrow.
- High or increasing levels of M protein.
- M protein made from IgA heavy chain.
- Bone lesions visible on X-rays.

SMM is monitored closely to manage the risk of progression to active multiple myeloma.
