Any Tips On Airport Traveling And Needing A Wheelchair?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭
Santa Ana, CA

I just returned from traveling alone and found it exceedingly hard to get help in an airport. I thought they would help me check bags. Nope. Then they want to drop me off at the gate in a chair. I still needed to go to the bathroom before boarding time and needed to be wheeled to the airplane door.

I have always asked for a wheelchair when I get plane ticket. I would never make it to the gate in time if I didn't. I never had a problem going to the bathroom or getting food. Once, when I was flying home from Phoenix, I was waiting for someone to push me and the pilot came along and pushed me because he was anxious to get home!

I add wheelchair assistance when I book ticket.. I really think depends on airline and which airport. I have had some leave me at the gate then others who wait for me while I go bathroom. I had one who waited while I grabbed a sandwich and drink. I do tip them well for extra nice services.

I travel from USA to England on a fairly regular basis and I always ask the airline for wheelchair assistance ahead of time, i usually add the wheelchair assistance when i book my flights. and they arrange the wheelchair for every section of my travel.

I sign up for the wheelchair service when I purchase my ticket. I ask for service to the door. The stewards take over from there and take my bag. I have never had a problem. Please tip the service to the gate and to your baggage. Just let them know if you have to go to bathroom. At the gate, sit up next to the desk where they can see you.. I could not fly without this service.

Traveling with multiple myeloma is a challenge for sure. I would just specify that you need wheelchair assistance when you purchase your ticket
