I Am 74 And Have Gone Through 4 Rounds Of Velcade, Dexamethasone And Revlimid And Am In Remission. I Am On A 10mg Revlimid Maintentance .
I did not have a stem cell transplant immediately due to heart issue. that has been resolved. I am now debating on staying on just the maintenance regimin because it is working or go ahead and go through the SCT. Any recommendations? Is the stress of the transplant worth it?
If the doctor has declared that you are in remission, it wonβt hurt continuing maintenance treatment till the myeloma relapses. That could be a long while and might be worth it. Based on your blood work, you may want to have the doctor stop treatment. I have done that (now on my sixth month) and I did not undergo a transplant.
I do take supplements (turmeric, multivitamins), low/no sugar diet and do an hour of serious yoga and exercise daily.
Good luck and have a healthy, enjoyable normal life!
It would depend on how many treatments you have had so far to obtain your remission as to whether or not you would choose ASCT as next line of treatment or not. It isn't as successful if you have had more than 3 lines of treatment. Either way, you would wait for relapse before next line of therapy, ASCT or otherwise. To answer your second question, I really struggled with ASCT and wouldn't do it again.
Diane, I have a wonderful hematologist oncologist that specializes in blood cancers. I would recommend that you follow your doctors advice. I am going to be 76 in a few weeks. I have Type 2 diabetes also. When my doctor started treatment almost 4 years ago he said that because of my underlying condition and the rigors of SCT protocol, he was ruling out any treatment that involved SCT. Go with what your doctor recommends.
