When Asked What Stage I Am In When First Diagnosed With MM, My Oncolncologist Said He Doesn't Go By Stage. He Goes By Their Blood Work.
Hi Karen,
Many oncologists are reluctant to stage multiple myeloma, but there are actually two systems, CRAB and the ISS system which can be used to provide a guide toward the level of multiple myeloma. Check out the resource articles here as a guide.
The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation also has published a comprehensive guide to all information on multiple myeloma. See below a photo of the guide. Go to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation website for more details on how you can download a copy.
Stage 3B is the highest stage for Multiple Myeloma. 3B means you have kidney issues
I agree with the papermaker1! It is good to know as much as you can. Information can be your friend. There have been a couple of times when I was able to correct the doctor as he did not know. Doctors are human too.
Karen, they do stage myeloma, but it is not as prognostic as staging for solid tumors. I was 3b at diagnosis. But I'm still here over 6 years laterππ
Karen, I just now read your question about stages. So, this post is intended also for people who are more recently diagnosed. I've not originally been tempted to ask my medical team regarding stage, mostly out of fear. Also, I have some doubts as to accuracy. I was extremely ill (very bad kidneys) when I was first diagnosed in January 2024 and have made a nice recovery. As for determining any progress I have made, my blood work improves a little bit at a time, with each lab result, and I have less pain. Someone on this site mentioned that MM is not a sprint, but rather is a distance run. I agree.
