Time To Recover From SCT

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

Had my SCT seven months ago. Have up and downs, being in full remision, but wonder how long it might take to feel "normal " or "almost normal " πŸ€”
Any answers or comments?

You will not be normal or yourself again. You will either be affected by the disease or by the treatment or both. You may be sleepy, you may get winded easily, you may feel some pain or discomfort but in the back of your mind you will ask every day how long do I have before it returns and the ultimate question, how long do I have?

It will dominate every conversation and when people ask how are you doing you will know what they mean. And they will always say you look good, because we do! But whether you waste away your time every day or be productive just enjoy every moment and be as happy as you can be.

You are blessed to be in remission. This is a good sign, a great sign that treatment worked for you. So you are lucky to have many more iterations of treatments ahead that will prolong your life into the far distant future. And with the explosion of technology we are currently in be ready for β€œthe cure.”

The cure, this time it’s for real 😳

I agree, there will never really be "normal" again. But for me, I am 10 months into SCT recovery and feel very good. But then yesterday, I had the worst neuropathy attack in almost a year. I think a lot of symptoms/issues I had prior to the SCT that were caused by the cancer itself are gone. Then like Mark said, there are treatment side effects that I'll have forever. But I am more than willing to accept them. And of course, I'm getting older (61 years old). That has its own set of issues.
But when I ask my oncologist, "when will this get better", "when will these numbers return to normal", etc. He always responds with; "...you just had a stem cell transplant". So what i have discovered is I am impatient. 😁
But, I really enjoy my life now and I know you will too.
Good luck, continued recovery and blessings to you!!
Mark

Thank you! I also feel a lot better than even before I was diagnosed. I think I didn't use the right words to ask how long the recovery time has taken? I attend my support groups and have heard different opinions, so I'm interested in the experience of this particular group members. I do accept things are not to be the same, but can't complain as the SCT has really been a lifeline for me. Hasn't been easy, but definitely worth! I'm grateful because I'm in remision, and my general health is good. I'm a very positive, Faith guided person, and trust this process. Whoever is next for a CST, be blessed and go through it with Faith, communicate with your doctors, make questions, and God bless you
