What Are Thoughts Regarding Going Through Therapy For Osteopenia.

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭
Bloomington, IN

I have a parathyroid that had an incredible work ethic. One of it's nodules decided to work overtime and did a dang fine job of draining my skeletal system of bone density. This was like 10 to 15 years go and I underwent surgery to remove the nodule with the adenoma.

My endocrinologist wanted to put me on therapy to strengthen my skeletal system. I have forgotten the name of the medicine but remember that it was a black label medicine. I passed since I am male and with Testosterone was… read more

I was getting Zometa IV x 1 month for osteoporosis until I had my stem cell transplant. I am still “new” to being in remission, so I am not sure of the long term use and its side affects. My oncologist has stated he will put me back on it once every three months after I get my full immunity back up to par.

Jim,
Check out @A MyMyelomaTeam Member for more information. He did a lot of research. He also takes strontium for his bones.

Tim,
There has been a lot of discussion on this site about side effects and long term use. Osteonecrosis is one side effect where the bones in your jaw break. Many have posted about that. Long term use can cause jaw bone death. You may be able to access the discussions in Q & A at the top of the page. If I had started taking Zometa or any of the other bone drugs, when I had my hard fall a month ago, I would have broken something, because the drug causes the bone to be brittle and fracture. These drugs do not build bone but suppress the bone turnover. Instead of taking them, i decided to try and take Calcium, magnesium, D3 & K2 to build them back up.

Hi Jim,
I have osteoporosis and the last time it was checked was 4 years ago. Then it was -3.6. They wanted to put me on Zometa or one of the other drugs. I did my research, because I have a heart condition, liver issue, kidney issues and dental issues. Most of these drugs have adverse effects for these. Then when you are done using them you can get osteonecrosis of the jaw, which seems more common with MM. Your fracture risk becomes worse after taking them, not better. It’s really a short term thing. I want long term, so I started taking MRM Bone Maximizer III (Calcium & Magnesium) with Nordic D3 & K2. I figured if MM takes the calcium out of the bones, I better put it back in. It’s more natural. It’s been over 4 years now and only one small rib fracture, which I was already getting.
