Is There Any Research Being Done As To How We Get Multiple Myeloma?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

I honestly thought that we would have the IMF and all kinds of people on our door step wanting to study us. My husband and I were both diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma almost exactly one year apart. We are not blood relatives and I understand that myeloma isn't considered an inherited cancer anyway. My first question was how did we get? Doctors said it was just a phenomenon-coincidence. I don't believe that at all! Yes, we live out in the country and it is easy to blame chemicals but how… read more

Hi i was diagnosed 4 years ago and am now in remission after asct. They claim it isn’t inherited but two of my uncles died from this disease in their 80’s. And now my 23 year old nephew has it. We all lived in different locations. I refuse to believe that heredity is not involved. More research is needed on this subject.

I would like to know this also! I live in mining country in the UP of Michigan, get my main treatment from Mayo's in Minnesota but have a local oncologist who handles the maintenance therapy that Mayo's dictates. In this tiny local oncology office, there are 7 of us with this "rare" cancer. I have heard numbers are unusually high in the iron ranges of Minnesota too. Can't be coincidence that you both got it. What were we all exposed to? And are our families in danger too?

I keep going through stuff in my head. My hair dye, tap water, poor nutrition, being overweight, I'm always painting something. I usually use latex, but a couple of times I have used strong smelling oil based paint. I don't any more. My neighbor went to a Myeloma Specialist at Mayo. The Specialist said that most of his myeloma patients live around farms. What does that say about our food supply? Anyway, they don't know what causes it. But it would freak me out if my husband had it too. My sister has MGUS. There isn't supposed to be a connection between us either. But they just don't know

I remodeled homes too and was exposed to many fumes, chemicals, mold and asbestos. I'm also allergic to many foods, medicines and have had severe reactions to anesthesia. It all takes a toll. The food we eat is not organic. Most flour is treated and not organic. I decided to try and change my diet and eat more fruits and vegetables and only organic. It may help.
