I worked around diesel fuel for 13 years. This may have had an effect.

I worked in fry cleaners for about 5 years when I was young. I also wonder if it was from the awful smells!

While the exact causes of multiple myeloma (MM) are not fully understood, several risk factors have been identified. Here are some key points from my knowledge base:

- Environmental Exposures: Exposure to carcinogenic chemicals like benzene, asbestos, and pesticides can increase the risk of developing myeloma. Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a chemical that could potentially fall into this category.
- Radiation Exposure: High doses of radiation can increase the risk of myeloma.
- Family History: Having a first-degree relative with myeloma increases the risk, but most people with myeloma do not have a family history of the disease.
- Ethnicity: African Americans have a higher risk, while people of Asian or Pacific Islander backgrounds have a lower risk.
- Other Factors: Age, gender (men are slightly more likely), and certain pre-existing conditions like monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) can also play a role.

Given your history of TCE exposure, it might be a contributing factor. However, it's important to consult with a healthcare professional for a comprehensive evaluation.
