How Long After Your Stem Cell Transplant Did It Take To Feel Better, To Be Able To Taste Food Again ?
My SCT was 16 days ago. I am utterly exhausted and everything tastes bad. Looking for some hope to feel better.
Tina it does get better. Eat and drink whatever you can.
I ate a lot of mashed potatoes! Loaded with butter, sour cream, and milk. I had my transplant in May 2024. Sweets still taste really gross..which might be a good thing!
Tina, I had mine the middle of June so I'm ahead of you. It took close to a couple months for my taste to come back and even then I noticed that some things that I really loved before still didn't taste quiet the same. All is good with that part now. As for exhaustion that will take a while too. Be patient, do what you can and then throw up your hands and be good to yourself. It will get better. I'm still not back to normal but that is mostly because I have been left with back pain due to the damage done by the cancer. I also use to live on diet coke and I no longer have any caffeine so I'm missing the spark of activity that it would create. I'm thinking of adding green tea to my diet for its health benefits and a little caffeine. Remember too that you need to get as many calories as you can. I found with my lack of appetite and food tasting bad I tended to not get enough calories and food is energy. At the beginning I was drinking Ensure and protein drinks to help with calories and the vitamins and minerals. I was also keeping track of calories to insure I was getting enough. I ate a lot of grilled cheese sandwiches and scrambled eggs since my husband is good at those and not a lot else๐
Thank you all. I think I underestimated the toll this would take in me. Thank you for your kind and honest answers.
The first 2 months after my sct all I drank was carnation breakfast essentials and ate sour cream and onion chips everything else had no taste or tasted like metal. I graduated to baked potatoes with butter and from there my appetite improved. I remember I would make the bed in the morning and walk to the living room to lie down on the couch because I was exhausted. I would try to take small walks when I felt I had some energy and think it took me a good 6 months to feel like myself. You really have been through a lot so be patient with yourself it will all slowly improve.
