They have been denied me 3 times, I kept appealing. Just got my third no, started May 2023. Next step is a hearing- I’m kinda over it at this point and even though I’m on maintenance and feel much better, it would have been nice to receive for 6months-year until I figured some of this out. Disappointed. Good luck to you. Maybe get a lawyer.

Not sure about the three to five months average, or where that number comes from. Mine took 14 months, with no denials or appeals. Really think it would have taken longer had my U.S. senator’s office had not got involved and started asking questions.

Disability Benefit Programs in the United States
1. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
- Funded through payroll taxes.
- Requires a recent full-time work history.
- Benefits start six months after diagnosis.
- Eligible for Medicare after receiving SSDI for 24 months.

2. Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- For low-income individuals, regardless of work history.
- Benefits can start the next month after approval.
- In most states, SSI eligibility qualifies you for Medicaid.

Eligibility Criteria
- Income Limit: Earning $1,260 or more per month likely disqualifies you.
- Inability to Perform Basic Tasks: Must be unable to perform tasks like standing, walking, lifting, sitting, and remembering for at least 12 months.
- Recognized Disability: Multiple myeloma is listed under Cancer (malignant neoplastic diseases).
- Work History: Not necessary for SSI but required for SSDI.
- Substantial Gainful Activity: Must be unable to do any other form of sustainable work.

Application Process
- Information Needed:
- Personal details: Full legal name, date of birth, Social Security number.
- Family details: Names and dates of birth of spouses and children.
- Bank account information.
- Medical evidence: Contact information for your oncologist and other medical providers.
- Application Methods:
- Online application for SSDI if not currently receiving benefits and not denied in the past 60 days.
- Local Social Security office or phone application if online criteria are not met.

Additional Tips
- Medical Records: Obtain copies of your medical records.
- Doctor's Letter: Have your doctor write a permanent disability letter for SSI.

Appeals
- Rejection: The SSA takes an average of three to five months to process applications. If rejected, you can appeal the decision.
