Joanne,
I did not have a Stem Cell Transplant early after my Multiple myeloma diagnosis and early treatments . After two years treatment I was in complete response remission. It is now 4 years ago that I started in remission.A year ago in March I had my stem cells harvested at Dana Farber for storage and reserved for possible future use. There are two advantages;
1. I had extensive lab, imaging and a full battery of tests. This characterized my physical condition to do a stem cell transplant and multiple myeloma parameters.
2.My stem cells are stored and available for future use.

Stem cell harvesting and storage can be a strategic option for managing multiple myeloma. Here are some key points to consider:

- Early vs. Delayed Transplant: Stem cells can be harvested and stored for use either immediately after chemotherapy or reserved for future use in case of a relapse.
- Risk Factors: High-risk myeloma patients are often encouraged to undergo early stem cell transplants, while those with lower-risk myeloma might opt to reserve the transplant for later.
- Procedure: Stem cells are typically harvested before or early in the chemotherapy cycle and stored frozen until needed.

Consulting with your healthcare team can help determine the best approach based on your husband's specific condition and risk factors.
