How Many Days Did You Spend Harvesting Cells?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Brother is getting his stem cell harvest today. How many days did it take to get sufficient cells for transplant and did you have side effects from the chemo administered before transplant day?

Jen3, I only got enough for one transplant after 2 1/2 days with a stem cell releasing drug. Apparently some people have stubborn stem cells, no real reason! But with only one transplant, here I am almost 4 years later, on no maintenance meds, and cancer free at the moment. No myeloma present! Take heart!

My sct Dr told me it might take a while for me because I had been on induction therapy for a year and all the chemo drugs cause stem cells not to grow. But to our surprise it only took 3 days but a lot of Zarxio 300 mg shots in my stomach every day. My reaction to melphalan was a burning sensation in my scalp had to ask nurse for a cold pack for my head and even though I sucked on ice I still had a sore in the back of my throat made it really hard to swallow for a few days. I was always thirsty kept 3 small bottles of water in my room at all times. Hair started falling out so requested nurse to shave my head which it’s really slow to grow back now but thank God for wigs!!!
My skin got so dry and itchy ended up ordering special oncology cream and lip balm at Amazon for face ears neck back arms and legs.
But I’ve found side effects seem to be slow to react on my system especially the fatigue the weakness I can see why it takes 3 months for your immune system to recover cause it does it’s a slow process but I must say worth it cause I’m in remission now so that’s a gray thing but I’m having lots of back pain. Some I’ve talked to are taking methadone for their pain and doing great working and everything but I’m not brave enough to try it yet. Tylenol every so often stop pain spray and bengay icy hot works also Qunol tumeric ginger 2400 mg.
Hope this helps!!!!
