Our skin absorbs what ever it comes in contact with it. I just embrace my gray hairs as I earned them - raising 4 boys always kept me on my toes!

Henna is safer. Since I’m 66 and finally getting more gray, I decided to try and go somewhat natural. Now I put the hair color in my hair like I’m shampooing, and leave it in for 5-10 minutes, instead of 30. Less chance of carcinogens.

A few of the ingredients in old-fashioned hair dyes have been considered carcinogenic and were banned from sale/use in the United States years ago. The only ones I am familiar with now are coal tar based products "FDA says that OTC products with coal tar concentrations between 0.5% and 5% are safe, and there's no evidence it causes cancer". However "California requires OTC coal tar products that contain more than 0.5% coal tar to be labeled with cancer warnings. An example of read the label. Lots of people do have reactions to coal tar products. I hope this helps at least with one ingredient!

Donna,
I’m now putting my hair dye on like shampoo and rinsing 5-10 minutes later. I figure by not leaving it on long it’s less toxic. Also, I don’t use the dark hair color anymore, since it’s more toxic.

I think it’s important to check carefully the source of the information we find on the internet. Are these proven facts?
The science is very complicated and there’s so much information to there. I’ve checked the best that I’m able and I continue to color my hair but I do look at the ingredients that are being used. We each need to make our own decisions in these matters. Ruth277
