What Has Been Learned About Both Predicting And Then Interfering With An On Coming Relapse?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

I am 88 years of age and am in my third year of treatment for MM. My understanding is that most patients suffer one or more relapses. I have yet
to experience a relapse and frankly fear this.

Thanks Martin9, I appreciate hearing that. I will be meeting with my oncologist and treatment team in the next couple of weeks and I plan to pose that question to them.

Herb, I have had one relapse (or potential relapse) since starting treatment. Let me explain what happened - I was on velcade, darzalex, and dexamethasone with weekly treatments and blood tests. Both my oncologist and I were watching my blood test results carefully (me not knowing exactly what to look for except for trends). We both noticed an increasing trend upward of my light chain results which usually arrive for my review a day or so after treatment. The results were trending upward, enough to be significant to us both so my oncologist suggested modifying the treatment regimen, which we did. The change was to pomalyst, kyprolis, and dexamethasone and my test results fell back into a normal range. I do not know if this was a relapse or the start of one but I certainly felt better (emotionally) with the change. Maybe it was predictive or maybe we acted too early. Since then I have learned much more by reading (studying the various drugs and treatments) and from members of this website. My advice is to work closely with your oncologist but watch your results also. We must all stay as involved as we can with our own health. Best wishes!
