What If It Is Not Viral But Bacterial In Nature? Do Bacterial Infections Have The Same Power To Start The Overproduction Of The B-cells?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭
Mount Joy, PA

I was not a viral patient (I was tested for nine different viruses - all turned out negative) - other than I had COVID-19 twice in one year - but the bacterial infection that overtook my immune system settled in my lungs, and it seemed to be unstoppable because it continued for over 18 months - on and off. I had rib pain, but it was not from pneumonia or pleurisy. Then I experienced a fractured L3, L5/S1 and two broken ribs.

Yes, bacterial infections can cause an overproduction of B cells. For example, one study found that bacterial infection can cause a large population of IgM memory B cells. Chronic infections can also activate autoreactive B cells.
B cells play an important role in infections beyond antibody production. They produce cytokines and act as antigen presenting cells (APCs) for T cells. When naïve or memory B cells are activated by antigen, they proliferate and differentiate into effector cells. These effector cells produce and secrete antibodies.
Some bacterial genera have evolved mechanisms to manipulate B cell functions, including: Micropinocytosis induction, Inflammasome down-regulation, Inhibitory molecule expression, Apoptosis induction, and Anti-inflammatory cytokine secretion.
Frequent infections, along with overproduction of B and T cells in the airways, can lead to permanent damage to the lungs.

@A MyMyelomaTeam Member and others on this thread with frequent infections - is anyone on regular IVIg infusions? My team agreed I needed them when my platelets dipped, especially during the fall and winter months when flu is around. The plan was to discontinue for summer months, but then along came Covid. I have been on the infusions now non-stop for over 4 years. I’ve stayed healthy other than one head cold this spring. Not exactly convenient to sit ther for 4 or so hours, but they also give my Darzalex injection and whatever else I need so it’s one session a month, so not too bad.

Jessica,
I thought the same thing! When are Oncologists concerned? I started looking up what blood test numbers were “concerning “ not just high or low-out of range but concerning for the doctor. These were hard numbers to find. When I couldn’t find an answer on the internet, I would finally ask my doctor. I thought 25 for Kappa light chains was high, since the normal range at the highest was 19. It turns out a concerning numbers is in the thousands.
