Re: Protein Electrophoresis Serum

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question πŸ’

My SPE Alpha 2 Globulin seems to be inching up from normal range. Inching (1.32 when normal is .37 - 1.11) It makes my SPE A/G Ratio slightly high, too. My protein, albumin are normal. I don't see Dr. until Jan 5. What questions should I be asking? Pic is one year ago, just before stem cell collection.

Here is a fairly good article on the explanation of elevated Alpha 2 Globulin and also explains the SPE test.

https://healthmatters.io/understand-blood-test-...

Their summary for elevated A2 Globulin is "inflammation". Kind of generic. But it could be an indication of a different condition you are experiencing. I think the most valuable reading in a SPE test is "Abnormal Protein Band" (some people call it Mspike), but don't let this scare you. What the test is trying to revel are abnormal cloned cells that "might" be considered malignant myeloma cells. When I get this test is has a verbal report attached to it with a doctors name and their analysis of paraproteins. Hopefully your test has this and you can discuss it with your doctor. In my opinion, there is too much emphasis on this "Mspike" number. You have to consider the entire blood chemistry when diagnosing conditions.
For example, I had my SCT 1 year ago and just a few weeks ago I finally had normal levels for White and Red blood cells. It took a year for my blood chemistry to rebuild itself. When I was first diagnosed, my IgA number was 3464. An indicator that the cloned malignant cells were impersonating IgA cells. After the SCT it dropped to 31. Basically all the malignant cells were killed by the chemo. Now my IgA is 138. Low level normal. But, my other immunoglobulins, IgG and IgM are below normal. Because my blood chemistry is still rebuilding.

I hope your meeting with your doctor goes well and he/she is willing to educate you on blood testing and MM. There are also many other articles and books on the internet to help explain it.

Good luck and God bless,
Mark

Hi Leila, check with your doctor, but like Ripnlips says, I just worry about my m spike being 0.0 and a normal albumin means your nutrition is good. I just recently got rid of the band on my electrophoresis on the Lambda region for the first time since diagnosis. Let us know what your doctor says πŸ₯°
