Does Multiple Myeloma Or The Treatments Affect Teeth?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭
Roanoke, VA

My husband's teeth were kind of normal pre-myeloma. Some fillings, a few crowns. Now they're breaking off, dead-looking, and the current advice is just to have the remaining ones pulled and get dentures.

Yes, multiple myeloma and its treatments can affect teeth. Here are some key points from the knowledge base:

- Increased Risk of Dental Issues: People with multiple myeloma are at a higher risk of developing dental problems.
- Treatment Side Effects: Certain cancer treatments, such as bisphosphonates, can increase the risk of dental issues. These treatments are used to manage bone damage and high calcium levels in the blood.
- Bone Degradation: Multiple myeloma can cause osteolytic lesions, leading to bone loss and weakening, which can affect the jaw and teeth.
- Specific Oral Problems: The disease can directly cause issues like gingival masses (tumors on the gums), osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), and maxillofacial bone pain.

Regular dental visits and coordination between your dentist and oncologist are crucial to manage these risks.
