Platlets
Can anyone explain platlets and when you blood test shows lower than normal and higher than normal levels? Thank you!
Platelets help your clotting. For those of us with MM anything above 100K is good (normal is around 150k). Platelets are also very short lived so they can get chewed up (go lower) and regenerate quickly (go higher). Most of the chemotherapy will reduce your platelet count. For example I am on 10 mg Revlimid daily and my platelets hover around 80 K. It is too low to increase my Revlimid but high enough so I still clot if I cut myself. Hope that helps.
Hi Jeff,
If you are on Revlimid you are likely to be on Eliquis, Warfarin (Coumadin) or similar to prevent blood clots. I think any of these could lower your platelets as they tend to make you bleed or bruise more easily.
My doctor moved me off Revlimid because he didn’t want my platelets to be less than 75k. Lowering the dosage didn’t improve platelet counts- along with low WBCs and Neutrophils. In spite of having a count now of 194k, my skin is tearing easily and I bleed a lot with little cuts.
Hi Jeff&, that is a good que. my platelets are hovering in the 30,000 and sometimes in the 40,000 range. I asked my doctor about it and he said that is the way some people respond to treatment. I get a shot of Velcade weekly. I’ve be Ed n getting weekly shots since April and when I ask how much long I would get Velcade I was told , “we will see later”. Obviously I wasn’t happy with that answer. I just have to be very careful not to get cut. I bruise very easily d sad I bumping into things is a ldd sad o something I try to avoid.
I know you probably wanted more information about platelets but we all live with the reality of our disease.
Hang in there and know we, the MM warriors are all around you and we a glad to offer a helping hand.
Good question and good info. My oncologist just lowered my Revlimid dose due to low counts. Ugh it’s all such a balance
