Can Bisphosphonates Cause Osteonecrosis Of The Femoral Head(avascular Necrosis).

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question πŸ’
Fayetteville, AR

We know bisphosphonates can lead to the complication of osteonecrosis of the jaw. Has anyone else been diagnosed with Stage III avascular necrosis of the femoral head with 50% involvement? I have been having an intense pain in my right hip and the MRI revealed avascular necrosis. The clinician I saw said "this is not from the myeloma." I haven't been to the referral appointment yet, but my question is Could it be from the myeloma treatment?

Biophosphonates can cause Osteonecrosis. Osteonecrosis happens when blood flow to part of a bone is reduced. This can lead to death of bone tissue, causing the bone to break down and joints to collapse.
There may be no symptoms of the disease at first, but over time, you will start to feel pain in the affected bone.
Treatments may include medications, physical therapy, and surgery.
Cold packs and heat treatments may help to ease pain and soothe stiff joints and muscles.

Hope and pray it doesn't progress. Is their anything they can do to strengthen your bones that cause ONJ?
