How Common Is It For A Father And Son To Be Have MM?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

My Father is 73 and I'm 50. My sister is 46 and is currently being tested. From what I have learned this is a non hereditary disease...yet here we are. Thanks!

Frank, I don’t think it is too common but they are finding that MM can run in families but Is not hereditary, no genetic link. Maybe exposed to the same chemicals etc. They are finding out more and more about Myeloma every day. Love, Marcia 🌸

My cousin on my father's side (Dad's brother's son} also was diagnosed with MM. I have encouraged all my siblings and cousins to get their blood tested for monoclonal protein count.

My oncologist at Dana Farber told me that there was a genetic test that they could use. However, the oncologist did not think I should be concerned at this stage, and not completely reliable? May be worth researching on the internet though?

Your family should do the Promise Study. The can check anyone especially relatives or people of African American decent. Ages 40-75. Free blood sample. It checks for MGUS, not MM.
