My doctor Dr.Brian Kelly in Lake Charles says I need to wear a back brace 24-7 for several weeks and he ordered one originally saying it costs 500.00 I asked if Medicare covered it he said no I said why not? He said since I had gotten one in August Medicare refused to pay for 2nd one.

Is this a back brace for your lower back? I wear one when I’m doing work, like working in the yard. I don’t see why it should cost $500. That seems excessive. I saw them advertised, for instance on Amazon for around $20 up to $60. Besides, with a prescription from a doctor, Medicare does pay for them.

If Medicare won’t cover a second brace, you might explore options like appealing the decision, checking with supplemental insurance, or seeking financial assistance programs.

AngieNixon and Jamie,
After my spinal fusion surgery, I wore a specially fitted back brace for 6-8 months.
Now with mm, I was sent to a specialist who fitted me with a back brace to cover my fractured vertebrae.
It was 2,000 but covered by Medicare and my supplement.
I only wear when I go out in the car ( I don’t drive) or out walking or shopping.
I also wear a cervical collar, which I bought on line.

Prior to my back fusion surgery, I wore a back brace which I purchased off of Amazon. It kept my back aligned and reduced those sudden jolts I would get if I accidentally twisted about. I wore it mostly for office work, where sitting up straight for hours at a time at a desk was part of the job. The down side is that when you wear the brace for extended periods of time, your muscles get used to it and become weaker. I would use it as needed, then allow my back muscles to carry the load as well.
