Do All MM Patients Eventually Get Bone Fractures?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am 9 months into my journey as a stage 3 MM patient, with no symptoms or side effects from medicine. I know they encourage weights to strengthen your bones & I do that, but will that be enough to stave off bone loss along with treatment & maintenance?

It’s been two years since I had the MM and I don’t have an issue on bone damage or fractures.
I think it’s because I on sulfasalazine 500 mg ,2 tab m/n , vit D3 and calcium 450 mg plus calcium carbonate 450 mg/ vit D 200 . Taken 2 tablets in the morning for about 5 years.
So I think it’s helped me on my bones prevent from broken or fractured.
Because I had a A/S and R A for many years back.
But I pray that this won’t happen to me as I know that MM always comes along with bone problems and kidney issues.
I had only bone joint pain and fatigue sometimes my shoulder and neck pain.

Having this problem and it’s used to it .
No complaints.
🙏😇🌸

Rick, Yes. As the AI answer above says, "Myeloma cells can erode bones, leading to lytic lesions and fractures, even without trauma." At my diagnosis, my vertebrae were described as honeycombed with pin holes. I had experienced multiple fractures to vertebrae, ribs and sternum. The treating doctor immediately started me on Xgeva, high dose calcium with vitamin D, and pain management meds along with the myeloma treatments. Thankfully, there have been no additional fractures. As the fractures healed, and the lesions reduced, the pain was minimized, and I gradually weaned off of the pain management meds.

I have Zometa every 3 months for 2 years. I walk every day. I do not tolerate calcium supplements, but I do drink non dairy products with calcium in them. I just had a bone density scan last week. My spine is normal. My hips have slight osteopenia. So I'm going to start using my weight vest. So, yes we can do a lot to help our bones.
