Can We Eat Sushi?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

I’ve read that you shouldn’t eat sushi. Is this true? Is it because of taking chemo? Anyone eating sushi every once in a while?

Personally, I avoid raw meat, fish, anything unpasteurized. We’re at risk with compromised immune systems as is.

I was told I could eat sushi and my favorite medium rare meat again 6 months after chemo for SCT...but, now at 9 months out from chemo - this week my monthly blood work showed lower immune system so they told me to go back to no more sushi or undercooked meat until that changes. of course we have to wash all fresh fruits and veggies as well. have you heard about the salmonella outbreak in organic carrots? avoiding hospitalization for food poisoning is tricky!!

We battle being immunocompromised for the rest of our lives. I think we need to be very choosy in our food choices. I like sushi once in a while but I will only eat 1-2 pieces and only if they are prepared fresh at a dedicated sushi establishment. I travel to Hawaii to be with some of my family (have been there 3 times since my dx of MM. After the stem cell transplant, no sushi but the last time I was there, I had one piece from a sushi restaurant. I also have found that shrimp makes me sick to my stomach now and I love love love shrimp. My new treatment, Talvey, has taken my sense of taste and smell away, so I eat to maintain but no longer for enjoyment. Yesterday was Thanksgiving. All the usual foods. No real taste but I ate. I am learning to appreciate textures, creamy, crunchy, chewy, soft, hard, etc. We must be wise in everything we do. If it doesn't agree with you, then don't eat it. If it's coming from a questionable source, don't eat it. If it's been sitting in your fridge for too long, don't eat it. Inspect, question, discern. Every day there is a recall on the news of ORGANIC foods. A little scary, huh? We need to be wiser than everyone else, don't take chances and learn to say NO (Thank you).

Depending on your treatment and your ongoing Meds, your immune system is completely compromised. Look at your Labs for your Ig levels and get your Natural Killer Cells (NKCs) tested. If your Igs are very low and your NKCs are under 5%, avoid raw foods - if you were to get sick you have no defense
