Cold And Bloodwork

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

I thought I saw proof posting that their FLC numbers went up if they had bloodwork during a cold/ vaccine. I’m due to have my mm bloodwork Monday and I’m finally getting over my cold. I’d there a chance my bloodwork could be off if they do it even if I’m not completely over the cold?

Hey Donna, my labs do fluctuate after infections and vaccines. It's important to realize that we need to look at trends with our labs, not just one set of labs.

My blood draw numbers, particularly light chains do change with colds and respiratory infections . Statistically there is some variation between tests, but your oncologist should discuss any important trends or differences. I acquired an application that stores the results of all my labs whether blood draws or imaging that typically is available from your cancer centers or hospitals. This can be useful if you change treatment centers or oncologists as well.

It's possible that having a cold or recently receiving a vaccine could affect your bloodwork results. Infections and immune responses can sometimes cause fluctuations in various blood parameters, including free light chain (FLC) numbers. If you're concerned about the accuracy of your results, it might be worth discussing this with your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance on whether to proceed with the bloodwork as scheduled or if it might be better to wait until you're fully recovered.
