When thyroid numbers change and possibly from MM/treatment; would I talk to my Oncologist, GP or ...both?

I know they both see my health records in the patient portal. At the risk of one referring me to the other, I'll ask both, I guess
One will say it may not be from treatment; just age or other reasons. Like I said, my Oncologist takes care of cancer and anything on the side, I'll be referred back to another practitioner/ GP. In my case, I have two....only, on my case; no specialists and… read more

I ask my oncologist first. She tests my Thyroid function regularly. She would refer me, if required.

Your primary doctor should be the one to provide care for your thyroid issues. I myself was believing that my hematologist/oncologist was responsible for everything that went wrong with my health. But, I referred issues that were medically needed to be addressed to my medical doctor was they are handled better and adequately. And between the both of them I feel like I have a fantastic medical team. Less scared and stress.

Hi Katheryn,
My GP serves as a gatekeeper for my healthcare testing and referrals. He is the doctor who found my multiple myeloma and referred me to a nephrologist who reviewed the test data , confirmed my diagnosis and referred me to the cancer center oncologist for treatment. My GP a year later tested me for thyroid function and referred me to an endocrinologist. My endocrinologist determined that my thyroid was impacted by MM medication and I have been treated and stable for over 3 years. My MM maintenance medication is stable as well.
I have had complete trust in my healthcare team and results have fortunately shown good progress. I hope that you can consult with your oncologist and determine a path forward in referrals to the proper Specialist. It can be frustrating, but they know more than I do. .

At this point it doesn’t matter what caused it, it’s treatment that’s important. Most insurances cover 2nd opinions. If you call a large center they have specialists. You can still have virtual visits with some centers and if your GP won’t help, I’d find a new dr. It’s to bad you have to deal with this on top of diagnosis. 🙏🏼

I have been on thyroid medicine for decades. My gp monitors it. At one of my 3 month appointments with my oncologist noticed my thyroid spiked. She told me to call my gp. My gp took over from there.
