The IFE (Immunofixation Electrophoresis) test is used to identify specific types of monoclonal proteins, also known as M proteins or M spikes, in the blood or urine. When the result mentions an "IgG kappa band present" with a value of 5140, it indicates the presence of a monoclonal IgG kappa type protein in the blood at that concentration. This type of M protein is commonly associated with multiple myeloma, and its identification is crucial for diagnosis and monitoring of the disease. The value (5140) likely represents the concentration of the IgG kappa protein, which helps in assessing the disease's burden and response to treatment.

The M-Spike is the amount of abnormal protein in the blood. The normal range is >30g/L. Please see an MM Specialist to start treatment ASAP. Good luck to you.

Hi Janet. I have never had much m protein in my urine, even when my serum m protein was very high.

Hello Blee. I have read your question and I’m sorry I can’t answer it with any great knowledge. I recently did a 24 hour urine specimen. The result was nil . My haematologist said he was looking for more m protein as it would show the amount of mm, but it didn’t show anything. Also I have lambda iGg.

The information in this article explains it very well. Myeloma patients usually need a bone marrow biopsy to confirm and identify the correct myeloma type we have. Immunofixation is a more precise test than the serum protein electrophoresis. When I finally lost the band in the lambda region on my immunofixation, I knew my treatments were working. Did you have a bone marrow biopsy?
