Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are used in myeloma treatment for several reasons:

- Chemotherapy: It can help slow or stop the growth of myeloma cells. In some cases, it can even lead to complete remission. The effectiveness varies based on the type and stage of myeloma, the specific chemotherapy regimen, and whether it is combined with other drugs.

- Radiation Therapy: This treatment uses beams of energy, such as X-rays, to kill cancer cells.

While these treatments can have side effects, they are often used to manage the disease and improve outcomes. It's important to discuss with your doctor the potential benefits and risks to make an informed decision about your treatment plan. Palliative care can also be integrated to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Depending on what you want, stem cell harvesting after one dose of chemo, then re-administering your own cells can work for a long time. My high school friend had 80% of her bone marrow affected by MM. She had the stem cell therapy last May. She didn’t have a lot of side effects though some people do. She is still doing well, able to work in her garden. I am at the smoldering stage unless the next testing shows something different. My oncologist follows me every 3 months with a PET scan, 24 hour urine and bloodwork. I had a plasmacytoma on my scalp which resolved with radiation. It’s a given that MM follows. Honestly you have to decide what you want to do. Nothing is mandatory and I hope this helps.

I'm not sure I understand your question. MM patients get chemotherapy and other treatments to put the MM into remission, maybe for several years. And then when your MM comes back, you do a different treatment to put it into remission. That gives you time with family, maybe you can work, go on vacations, have hobbies, attend family events like reunions. And for radiation, I had it for soft tissue tumors. It did help shrink them some. They were in an area that caused a lot of pain. But shrinking helped reduce the pain. I don't even get much remission but I keep doing the treatments they recommend because it gives me more good, positive time with my family. Good luck to you.
