How Do I Get Through MRI. Horribly Claustrophobic !

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭
Harwich, MA

I had an mri ten years ago with oral sedation and crawled out of the machine. Not a pretty picture. They do have a ambient wide bore mri. But getting a head scan not sure I can handle anything around my head. Yikes! Big baby here!

I have had several head MRIs due to a blood clot in my brain 15 years ago. I take a Xanax, and close my eyes the whole time. I don’t believe you can wear headphones on a head MRI. I am very clostrophobic, but I imagine I am on a beach with my daughter! Good luck.

I am not overly claustrophobic, but
MRI and PET scans cause additional pain for me. Even though they try to make me as comfortable as possible, it is impossible for it to be a pain-free process. I had several breaks in my back and left pelvis and hip before I was diagnosed. So, I keep my eyes closed and pray or sing Christian songs to myself. I also repeat Psalm 23 and the Bible verse, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13. Just knowing God is with me helps me get through an MRI or PET scan. I pray that this can help you as well. And the knowledge that we here are praying for you.

I had my PET scan this morning and followed my own advice. Keep your eyes closed and pray. That 30 minutes goes pretty fast that way.

Thank you all for your advice. I did it today and it wasn’t bad. Ativan 2 mgs helped a lot. Along with prayer. This is a very kind group. Ty!❤️
