Does Anyone Else Have Issues With Taste?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭
Washington, AR

I lost my sense of taste after I had covid back in January. It is not totally gone but pretty messed up. For instance, stake tastes like cardboard wrapped in tinfoil. A lot of foods taste kind of metallic. The more complex the food the worse it seems to be and Wine or Alcohol is so sharp it is undrinkable. It may be just the covid but I was wondering if it could have something to do with the combination of Covid and Multiple Myeloma?

Anyone else having this issue?

I had a sct on 01/09/23. I had a loss of taste for awhile. In fact, some foods I love, like bacon, made me nauseous. I'm now 6 months after sct and 3 months in remission. Taste and appetite are back.

When I first started my MM drugs my taste buds were gone. Everything did taste like metal. I believe it’s mostly Revlimid but the other drugs I take also contribute to the taste. I couldn’t eat bread because it tasted like cardboard.after the first year or so I had a long talk with my Oncologist about quality of life and he said my taste buds would come back and they finally did. Some bread still tastes like cardboard but I can taste other foods like steak, pork chops, vegetables etc etc. Hopefully your taste buds will come back although catching Covid didn’t help. I also got Covid last October but didn’t have any side effects.

My husband says nothing tastes good and his appetite is not as good as it once was. Our experience with the doctor and nurse practitioners are similar. We tell them the problem and mostly just pass it off as probably a side effect of chemo even though Joel finished induction chemo weeks ago and is now on maintenance. The NP prescribed a low dose of pain killer at the last visit but didn't change anything else.

No problems with taste. It may depend on the type of treatment you’re receiving. Maybe talk to your oncologist about changing the treatment regimen.
