My Oncologist Said SCT Isn't Advised At My Age (73). Does Anyone Have Experience? Please Share. Thank You.
At 76 I had a SCT. I had to pass a number of physical tests first. I would recommend getting a second opinion regarding a SCT.
As we age our stem cells become less numerous, less healthy, and less efficient. As a result, the age cap has been determined to be around 72 years, though that can vary. In addition, our ability to withstand the harvesting procedure and the high dose chemotherapy prior to the SCT that is very hard on your entire body. Side effects, including the potential for death, are at a much higher rate with age. It's not the actual SCT that's the problem - it's the procedures to harvest enough healthy stem cells and the pre SCT chemotherapy that are the problem.
Greetings from Alaska when I was diagnosed, I was in kidney failure, from IGg lambda light chains. I have chronic CKD but I was given my SCT, which has helped immensely. I will say a pray for you in hopes that a second opinion, will lead you to having an SCT. God bless you.
A SCT is a Stem Cell Transplant where they harvest your stem cells and give you a heavy dose of chemotherapy too kill your immune system then put the healthy stem cells back into your bloodstream too begin fighting the cancer.
My Oncologist doesn’t like staging my cancer either because you never know how well the treatments will work. I’m 71 and they told me that because of my age and already having had two SCTs they wouldn’t do a third one so I get chemo once a month and so far everything is going well. The SCTs aren’t a guarantee that it will work either. If your numbers are good I would stick with what you are doing now.
