Breathing Problems

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

My husband has MM. Starting our 7th year. A few years ago he was breathing hard while at Dr. app. They made appointment for a lung scan , (that day) and found clots in his lungs. Put on Eloquis Now on Dara, with 'Dara tummy', and a hernia. Super hard for him to breath, after exertion, or bending over. This doesn't seem to bother Dr.s. But sure bothers him. Any experience or answers?

I’m only beginning my journey. I have anemia and some numbers are higher, but no other symptoms. I go to a naturopathic type of clinic. That doctor put me on three fish oil capsules per day, as a clot preventative. Since we know clots can occur, I might as well play it safe. I don’t know if this is helpful once you already have clots, but perhaps it will help someone.

I had a blood clot in the back knee, started on Eliquis but also had the gene blood test. I had 2 negative but one postive so needless to say I will be on Eliquis 2.5MG twice a day for the rest of my life. Also right at the get go of being diagnosed with MM my Oncologist said at my age I should never take Revlimid. She said It can give you blood clots at my age. I think I was 77 at the time.

I had clots move from my legs to my lungs years before I was diagnosed with MM.
I waited too long to get looked at to the point I was having chest pains.
I went to the emergency room and was given a shot in the stomach. I don't remember what it was but I had instant relief. Hospitalized for a few days and put on Xarelto. I was taken off it after I left my truck driving job. We felt the long sitting hours might have caused it. The clots started in the back of my knees.

I pretty sure revlimid and possibly other drugs we myeloma patients take can cause clots. I've been on Xarelto since I started revlimid.
Maybe they found only minimal clots and are confident with their treatment.
Has his breathing improved?

Breathing problems, such as shortness of breath (dyspnea), are common in individuals with multiple myeloma. Here are some key points from the knowledge base:

Causes:
- Anemia: Reduced red blood cell count can lead to poor oxygen circulation, causing breathlessness.
- Kidney Problems: Myeloma-related kidney impairment can lead to fluid buildup and breathing issues.

Management Tips:
- Breathing Exercises:
- Take slow, even breaths.
- Inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth.
- Practice pursed-lip breathing: Inhale slowly through the nose, hold for 1-2 seconds, exhale gently through pursed lips.
- Positions to Help Breathing:
- Avoid lying flat; prop your head up with pillows.
- Sit upright and lean forward with arms resting on a solid surface.
- Avoid Overexertion: Plan your day to include frequent rests and limit strenuous activities.

Treatment:
- Addressing Anemia: Proper treatment for multiple myeloma can increase red blood cell count, alleviating anemia-related breathing problems.
- Kidney Treatment: Dialysis may be necessary for severe kidney damage to filter the blood.

Additional Advice:
- Consult Your Doctor: Always follow your doctor's advice and discuss any breathing issues you experience. They may adjust your treatment to help manage symptoms.

I should have added that they put him on Eloquis. His breathing had improved, but now it is worse and worse. Bending over to tie his shoe can take a few minutes to recover. And just walking for awhile takes his breath away. Had scans, but no clots are seen????
