Does Anyone Have Bowel Issues While Taking Revlimid?
I take my Revlimid at night so I can sleep off the fatigue, but all morning long and sonetimes into the afternoon I have diarrhea with constipation. I feel like if I can just empty my bowels I would be fine, but I feel like I can never finish and then I am back in the bathroom in less than an hour. This goes on all day long until it finally stops. Is this normal? I now have hemorrhoids from straining so much.
I now take a daily probiotic and it seems to be working
Nearly 13 years of MM and being on Revlimid, my watery diarrhea became worse over the years. The last couple years I noticed after taking the Dex it seems to get worse. I don't think the Dex itself is causing it but it might be triggering muscle spasms in my GI tract that's adding to it. My oncologist put me on Atropine along with immodium and psyllium husk fiber capsules. That worked great for awhile and then it started getting bad again. I went to a GI doctor and she put me on Prevalite Cholestyramine. That also worked great for couple weeks and just like the other meds, it started getting bad again. So I started taking the Atropine along with the the rest of the stuff and that seems to be working so far. What's sad is I like to get out and do things like ride my Harley Trike.. I don't last very long when I go out, I tire fast, pain sets in and then the diarrea starts but it's still better than sitting home watching TV. I keep a change of clothes on my Harley and in my car just in case. So if this combo of meds start to fail, then I'll do what's necessary in order to go out and have some fun. That means wearing a diaper if I have to. I'm not going to sit home because of diarrhea while waiting for God to call...BUT!! What's more important for me right now is my next chemo. The Revlimid is failing, my M-spike has been going up every month and the doctor wants to switch soon. He mentioned maybe trying Pomalyst and what's good about that, besides killing cancer cells, is that other patients I spoke to said their diarrea was much less to none while on Pomalyst. Anyway, good luck and keep up the fight. 😉
BJ, You might ask your Dr. about prescribing a bile acid sequestrant such as Colestipol or Colesevalem. As it was explained to me, cancer meds we take can cause an excess of bile acids in the colon and this can result with the diarrhea. I had the same issue and the Colestipol did the trick. It's a granular powder that you mix in with some juice.
Good luck!
After 11-1/2 months I finished treatment. In partial remission. Still doing monthly IVIG treatments once a month. During treatment I had constipation for several days then 2 or 3 days of diarrhea. Since being off treatment I have had diarrhea-up to 7 times a day (and night). Tried Imodium. Gave up all sugar. Had upper and lower colonoscopy -both were negative. Lost 20 pounds since October. Dr prescribed Lomotil. Does help for about a day. Have to now plan outings where I know where the bathrooms are. One horrible incident were I did not make it (sorry, TMI) my point is this is not good. I see the GI doc again on January 19. Quality of life is affected. But I will push thru. Still finding life good otherwise. God Bless you all.
I have diarrhea at the end of each cycle of Revlimid. Now that I am taking the generic version, I have diarrhea every day. I have completed one three-week cycle of the generic version and started the next cycle with the same problem. I see my oncologist in 10 days and plan on asking him if this is what I should expect. Imodium doesn't seem to help. It is a nuisance to deal with this on a regular basis!
