What Is Considered An Acceptable Kappa/Lambda Ratio Or What Number Is Worriesome?

My Kappa is slowly rising; from the last four blood tests. My tests are 2 1/2 to 3 months apart. One test result in between the rises, put the Kappa number at the highest end of the range. Since this test they are continuing to rise. I started Curcumin again....just to see what happens.

Donna, One comment the doctor made today is illness, infection, injury, stress, etc. can cause a temporary jump in the Kappa, and that is why they monitor for a longer term upward trend before changing treatment. That fits with your increase after a bout of Covid. Here's hoping I can be well, and be happy....with lower Kappa on the next blood test.

Hello mcastle- my K and L, K/L and M spike were all in normal range or non-detect in April of this year, then I caught Covid. My K jumped to 53, L was at the very high end of normal range, which made the ratio above 2 and out of range. The M- spike was suspicious at the detection limit.

FYI- The M- spike calculation at detection limit is always suspect to me. From reading up on the chromatography there are subtraction of peaks and measuring or areas under the peaks. It also sounds like some tech’s eyesight are better than others when identifying these tiny peaks near baseline. So I lump these Non Detectable results in with May be present, recommend repeat test in 3 months….
Anyway, after recovering from Covid all my results returned to normal values and the M-spike was non detectable again.
It’s just good to remember any infections, vaccinations, colds, flu, anything that sets off your immune system, will likely cause your light chains to bounce.

I enjoy reading all these posts. I would like to add that my light chains did increase after a bout of Covid. I believe most doctors will look at trends over several months before they decide on a treatment change.

Dorothy74,

No my hematologist is not a Multiple Myeloma Specialist. The last time I checked, there were only six of them in Texas, and none of them were in San Antonio.

Per his bio; His practice covers the full range of blood disorders, with a special interest in multiple myeloma. His clinical research focus is aimed at finding better treatments for malignant lymphomas. He woks out of Mays Cancer Center (UT Health - MD Anderson San Antonio Cancer Center).
