My Oncologist/Hematologist Ordered A NT-Pro BNP Test. Has Any One Had This Test Done?

My NT-Pro BNP value is high.
A test for NT-proBNP is primarily used to help detect, support diagnosis, and in some instances evaluate the severity of heart failure. NT-proBNP is released in response to changes in pressure inside the heart. Higher-than-normal results suggest that you have some degree of heart failure.

I get this test quite often. I also have familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is basically an enlarged heart with electrical issues, i.e. arrhythmias.

Due to enlargement, it may not pump as efficiently, thereby causing heart failure symptoms. It can also cause sudden cardiac arrest due to abnormal rhythms such as ventricular tachycardia, which can turn into ventricular fibrillation then sudden cardiac arrest. Often that's the only way it is detected.

Some athletes develop HCM, or inherited it, and sometimes you see them collapse on a playing field or court due to an SCD episode. Luckily I was finally able to get an implanted cardio defibrillator/pacemaker after YEARS of testing and back and forth with doctors, and family history of HCM/SCA/SCD.

Not everyone with heart failure also has HCM, it can be caused by other things, but the symptoms can be debilitating in their own right, i.e. shortness of breath, fatigue, fainting, nausea, etc...

I know light chains can cause problems with other organs such as the heart and kidneys, etc... thereby increasing your BNP results. I am curious why your hem/once ordered this for you, but it's good that he or she did. Do you mind sharing your results, I am curious to compare. 🙏❤️

Robert,
I had a heart attack in March of 2021. In May my then Oncologist ordered a NT-Pro BNP which was 418 pg/ml. By August it had gone down to 318. It should have been less than or equal to 183 pg/ml. The notes on my test say “NT-Pro-BNP values less than 300 pg/ml have a 99% negative predictive value for excluding acute congestive heart failure.” I found it almost impossible to get into a Cardiologist, so when my heart rate would not come down, I went to the ER. They said I was the healthiest person there. (This was during Covid). A week later I had the heart attack at home and was so mad at them I did not call 911. I rode it out and survived. I was at peace and thought if God thought it was my time, then okay. I will submit to God’s will. Because I did not go to the hospital and get tested, they never believed I had a heart attack. Are you have any tightness in your jaw? I had that and my legs would just stop working.

Robert,
I am taking Diltiazem, a Calcium channel blocker. I was taking Metoprolol, but it wasn’t working to stop my SVT’s. A neighbor just started a Statin after getting light headed and having a really high cholesterol level. In just 3 weeks it came down to normal. Make sure your are seeing a good Cardiologist.💕
