Would You Recommend Stem Cell Transplant ?

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Was it worth what you went through? Side effects ? Recovery time ? I know everyone is different I'm just wanting to hear from people who have had it and what they thought about it or if they had to do it over would you do it again? OR opt out ? How did it help? There's so much I don't understand about this cancer :/

I am 73 years old and just went through the SCT. I was told it would be hard, and it would be a mental strain. It was not as hard as people say. Physically it was pretty easy, the side effects were minimal. The staff at the hospital was great and the procedure was down to a science, the 21 days in the hospital began to drag after a couple of weeks, but when I bounced back it was great. Now I am 107 days from the transplant and getting stronger daily. The Bone Biopsy and PET Scan are clean with no evidence of MM cells but will be on maintenance for probably 2 years with monthly blood tests and follow-up for a while. But life is good, I believe in the power of prayer and the support of family, and the belief in Jesus Christ. have helped me through. Have faith and a positive attitude to get you through. If I could or would have to I would do it again if necessary

My husband has a sct six years ago. He thinks it was worth it. His oncologist is thrilled with how well he is doing. We live in Canada and healthcare coverage is very different. He was in hospital about three weeks. He was able to come home some in the beginning and again towards the end of his stay. The nurses were fantastic and kept his symptoms under control.

Yes but personal stories from people who have gone through this is more helpful for me than talking it over with my Dr who has never had myeloma let alone a stem cell transplant .
