A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭
Blountville, TN

I did not have a SCT and I am stable but my numbers keep fluctuating they just went up from 11 to 13.1. My doctor says as long as I am stable he is happy. What I want to know is there anything I should be eating and not eating that will help my numbers go down. I want to get my numbers down into the single digits so I can get off velcade I am taking 1 shot of velcade per month and taking 25mg of Revlimid. If anybody knows what might help please share.

My doctor says eat what you want..I like veggies, fruit and chicken, salmon, an occasional freshly cooked hamburger with grilled onions, tomatoe and mushrooms. (I left last two off inadvertantly.) I bake the chicken coated with light sprinkle of instant mashed potatoes.

When managing your diet with multiple myeloma, it's important to focus on safe food handling and choosing the right foods to support your health. Here’s a quick guide:

**Food Safety Do’s:**
- **Cook all meat and fish thoroughly** to ensure all bacteria are killed.
- **Cook eggs thoroughly** — avoid runny or sunny-side up eggs.
- **Wash produce well** before you peel or eat it.
- **Refrigerate deli meats**, including dry-cured sausages, to prevent bacterial growth.

**Food Safety Don’ts:**
- **Avoid raw eggs** in products like cookie dough or homemade mayonnaise.
- **Do not drink unpasteurized milk or juice** as they can contain harmful bacteria.
- **Avoid soft cheeses** such as brie, blue cheese, or Gorgonzola.
- **Stay away from salad bars and buffets** where food contamination is more likely.
- **Avoid raw sprouts** like alfalfa, which can harbor bacteria.
- **Be cautious with well water**; ensure it's boiled for one minute or properly filtered.

**Diet Tips:**
- **Make plants the focus** of your diet, aiming for a plant-based diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.
- **Limit unhealthy fats** like those in butter and fried foods to less than 10% of your total calorie intake.
- **Incorporate healthy fats** such as olive oil, avocados, nuts, and seeds into your meals.
- **Moderate your sugar intake** to avoid spikes in glucose levels.

Always consult with your healthcare provider before making significant changes to your diet, especially if you have additional health concerns or are undergoing treatment for myeloma.
