Surgery Due To Myeloma

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question ๐Ÿ’ญ

Hi...i just had spine surgery. The doc infused cadaver bone in c5, c6 due to myeloma damage. He also found a bone out of place and reset it. It was not on any xray or mris. Has this happened to any of you?

Broke 3 of my 5 11 and 12. Wasn't sure if my back pain is from mm or spine. But some days it's really hard to stand and walk. It's been 3 months now and my back is actually doing really good now. And my mfactor is dropping fast so things are finally looking up. Still have up and down days. But looking forward to normal days.

Surgery for myeloma can be necessary in certain situations, particularly when bone lesions in the spine cause vertebral compression fractures, leading to severe pain, deformity, and loss of mobility. Here are key points about spinal surgery for myeloma:

Types of Spinal Surgery:
1. Vertebroplasty:
- Involves injecting a specialized cement mixture into the collapsed vertebra.
- Minimally invasive, guided by X-ray imaging.
- May involve a small incision or needle only.

2. Kyphoplasty:
- Similar to vertebroplasty but includes the use of a balloon to create space before injecting the cement.

Benefits:
- Pain Relief: Significant pain relief reported by many patients.
- Mobility Restoration: Some patients regain the ability to walk post-surgery.

Risks and Complications:
- General Surgical Risks: Blood clots, blood loss, infection, breathing problems, reactions to medication, heart attack, or stroke.
- Specific to Myeloma Patients: Higher risk of complications such as in-hospital pneumonia, surgical site infection, and kidney failure.
- Spinal Surgery Specific Risks: Spinal cord injury, nerve pain, continued or worsening spine pain, leakage of bone cement, sexual dysfunction, and damage to adjacent spine segments.

Eligibility:
- Ineligibility Factors: Low blood count, abnormal bleeding, or infections, which are common in myeloma patients, may make some ineligible for surgery.

Post-Surgery:
- Complications: Some patients may require additional surgery due to complications.
- Immediate Medical Attention: Necessary if signs of infection such as swelling, redness, increased pain, or bleeding from the surgical wound are noticed.

Additional Considerations:
- Chemotherapy Timing: Undergoing chemotherapy shortly before surgery can increase the risk of surgical failure.
