Blood Sugar Spike On Dex

A MyMyelomaTeam Member asked a question 💭

Is it normal for your blood glucose to rise while on Dex? Mine went from 90 to 130 mg/dl. Does it keep going up with treatment?

Yes, high blood glucose is a side effect of dexamethasone. Drinking water and walking helps to keep it down. I crave sweets when I take it. Watching refined sugars and carbs also helps. This is one of the most distressing aspects of treatment for Myeloma. Water retention, anxiety and insomnia also. My cholesterol and lipids also increased on the high dose dex. But the good news, it helps kill myeloma cells and helps the chemo work better, so stick with it. Hoping you can decrease your dose when your Myeloma is controlled 😇💗💕

130 really Isn’t that alarming. But it is one of the side effects of the dex , and something that you do need to watch . Fortunately I didn’t have a problem with it elevating my blood sugar . Hopefully you won’t either ...
You’re to be commended for asking all the questions. Good answer gives you knowledge about your disease and knowledge also give you power , power to make good decisions. Wendym, from my experience, it's a definitely YES. Every week I take Dex my glucose goes sky high. At one point it was in the 500's. To mitigate that I had to take three different insulin medications short acting, long acting and metformin at one point. These days I take metformin a couple days before and after the Dex, and long acting insulin daily so that I can maintain it in a reasonable range. I did a little blurb about it in my book My God it's cancer, where my research shows that in some cases it it difficult to be restored to normal in some people. I have proven that as correct. When I am off the Dex, my levels reads to lower but it has never returned to normal levels. I also get insomnia form Dex. Hope this helps.
